Theatre Photography | Live Stage Performance
Live theatre thrives on contrast - comedy and tragedy, stillness and motion, sound and silence, light and shadow.
Great theatre photography exists at the intersection of those elements, capturing the precise moment when performance, staging, and lighting come together on stage.
The Productions
The images below are drawn from high school and university theatre productions photographed across both traditional proscenium stages and intimate black-box environments. Each production brings its own visual language - from large ensemble musicals to actor-driven dramatic staging - but the goal remains the same: preserving the energy and storytelling of live performance.
My goal is to capture performances as they actually feel in the room - the energy of the performers, the decisions behind the staging, and the way lighting shapes what the audience sees. That means paying attention not just to the actors, but to the full environment and the creative team that makes the production work.
Approach
I approach each show as a documentarian inside a live production - working with what’s happening on stage rather than trying to control it.
All performances are photographed as they happen, under live production conditions. I don’t change lighting cues, reposition performers, or interrupt the show. My role is to preserve the atmosphere created by the lighting and set designers, director, and technical team while capturing strong moments that can be used for marketing, archives, and promotion.
Selected Production Photography
These productions represent a range of theatrical environments, from black-box dramas to large-cast musical theatre.
My focus when photographing live performance is preserving the atmosphere of the stage - the interaction between performers, lighting, and staging that defines each production.
Collaboration
Every production has different needs - from archival documentation to promotional materials for upcoming shows.
